Hygiene and Sanitation Project - MaD Cambodia

Picture
Rotary Club of Angkor supports a locally based NGO called MAD Cambodia. They focus on a number of projects but the one that Rotary Club of Angkor strongly supports is their Sanitation Project. MAD’s mission is simple : To prevent the spread of disease and illness caused by poor sanitation and hygiene by providing rural communities with access to improved sanitation facilities and educating communities about the importance of good hygiene practice.

MaD constructs and installs compost toilets. These are far more hygienic than other types of toilets in rural Cambodia.  Squat toilets dispose of human waste only a few metres below ground level, meaning that they frequently contaminate the water table that many people source their drinking water from.

Mad’s toilets are different human waste is disposed of in a 20 litre sealable bucket and then covered with a soil, sawdust and rice husk mix. When the bucket is full, it is sealed and left to fully compost for 6 months. The compost can then be used as an effective fertiliser for soil and crops, as it is high in important nutrients for soil health: nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Composting toilets are therefore also an organic and sustainable way to contribute to soil fertility and food security amongst rural communities, as well as being a hygienic and safe way to dispose of human waste.
